Non-Destructive Testing

Man in manliftNon Destructive Testing is used to assess equipment without any harm being done. This type of inspection helps our customers make well-informed decisions based on the condition of their equipment.

Several methods are used to locate discontinuities on the surface & below the surface of the item inspected:

Magnetic Particle Testing (MT)

MT Testing is the process of setting up a magnetic field on ferromagnetic material. When the magnetic field is interrupted by a discontinuity, a leakage field is formed. An inspection medium, dry or wet particles, is applied to allow those particles to build up along the leakage, revealing the discontinuity.

Globex Corporation uses MT inspection method on the following items:

  • Crane Hooks
  • Lifting Devices
  • Pipe Welds
  • Rolls
  • Gears
  • Fabrication Weldments
  • Structural Repairs
  • Repair Welds
  • FD & ID Fans
  • Railroad Wheels & Axles
  • Crane Wheels & Axles
Penetrant Testing (PT)

PT Testing uses a liquid material that’s applied to the area for inspection, which requires dwell time. Dwell time is the time taken to soak into any discontinuities. After the penetrant has had time to dwell, the excess penetrant is removed and the surface is cleaned thoroughly, dried out, and then applied & allowed to dwell. The penetrant in the discontinuities “bleeds out” by capillary action, showing the discontinuities.

Globex Corporation uses PT inspection method on the following non magnetic items:

  • Stainless Steel Pipe
  • Bronze Worm Gears
  • Stainless Steel Welds
  • Pressure Vessels
  • Bronze Hooks
  • Stainless Steel Rolls
  • Stainless Steel Fans
Ultrasonic Thickness Testing (UTT)

UTT Testing uses high frequency sound waves that are introduced into the material by using a transducer. The sound wave goes through the material and bounces off the back wall and right back to the transducer. The distance is measured by the time the sound travels from the transducer & back, and then the instrument converts the information into “thickness readings.”

Globex Corporation uses UTT inspection method on the following items:

  • Thickness of Pipes
  • Tanks
  • Pressure Vessels
  • Heat Exchanger Shells & Heads
  • Webs on Beams
  • Thickness on Fan Housings
Ultrasonic Flaw Detection (UT)

UT uses high frequency sound waves that are introduced into the material with the use of a transducer. As the sound travels through the material and hits a discontinuity, it bounces back to the transducer and the distance is measured by the time in which the sound travels from the transducer to the discontinuity and back to the transducer. The instrument then converts the sound into distance. This information is used to locate a discontinuity below the surface of the material and give an accurate distance from the surface.

Globex Corporation uses UT Inspection to locate discontinuities in:

  • Pins
  • Shafts
  • Axles
  • Rolls
  • Bolts
  • Studs
  • Plates
  • Welds
Visual Testing (VT)

VT Inspection is used in all NDT methods. The first step is to visually inspect to find the overall condition. Overhead lighting, handheld lights, gauges, and mirrors may be used for the inspection. Bore and fiberscopes may also be used for these inspections.

Globex Corporation uses VT inspections on:

  • Crane Hooks
  • Lifting Devices
  • Pipes
  • Pressure Vessels
  • Tanks
  • Welds
  • Bolt
  • Studs
  • Cables
  • Chains
